Chinese New Year celebrations!

14 February 2018

Mrs Liu, our Mandarin teacher, led a wonderful assembly to open our Chinese New Year celebrations. The children learnt about how Chinese families celebrate Chinese New Year, which this year is on Saturday, often by eating dumplings which Mrs Liu learnt to make herself as a child. She also told us about the dragon parades and invited us to go to the Chinese Quarter at the weekend and see how Birmingham’s Chinese community will celebrate. We learnt about why the Chinese name each year after an animal, the Emperors’ race for the animals and thought about which animal we are. Mrs Liu told the children that Mr Moore was born in a year of the dog and how from this she had worked out his age! It was great to hear some Year 3 and 4 children sing a song in Mandarin and Year 5 children perform a short play in Mandarin.

We thank our partner school, King Edward VI (Aston) School for our involvement in their Swire Foundation Mandarin project which employs Mrs Liu to teach Mandarin at Aston Tower. We were pleased to welcome Mrs Lewsey, the Deputy Headteacher to the assembly and thanked her, and Mr Parker, the Headmaster, for involving us in this project.
